Summary

It’s just an everyday apocalypse。

Three years ago the aliens invaded Tokyo。 Nothing was ever the same again。

But after a while, even impending doom starts to feel ordinary。

The Japanese Self Defense Forces are still looking for a way to combat the looming alien threat three years after the invasion, but so far conventional weapons have had no effect on the mothership。 Maybe it’s time to try something unconventional。 Meanwhile, Kadode Koyama is in high school。 She and her best friend avidly track the aliens’ movements on social media and less enthusiastically study for college entrance exams。 When the end of the world is overhead, you learn to take things one step at a time。

I'm not sure what to say about this。 An alien vessel (resembling Darth Vader's ship from Star Wars) is hovering above Tokyo and has been for 3 years。 There was some killing and destruction when it arrived, but now it's just sitting there。The story follows some school girls who are living normal lives in the shadow of this ship。 There is plenty of dark humor here including satire of the world's governments。So far, it is quite readable。 I'm not sure what to say about this。 An alien vessel (resembling Darth Vader's ship from Star Wars) is hovering above Tokyo and has been for 3 years。 There was some killing and destruction when it arrived, but now it's just sitting there。The story follows some school girls who are living normal lives in the shadow of this ship。 There is plenty of dark humor here including satire of the world's governments。So far, it is quite readable。 。。。more

another story of messed up relationship between kids and their mothers drama from Inio Asano and that platonic love between friends。 Reminds me of Seki and Shimizu。 And this, mixed with "aliens" and world drama because of those aliens and why somehow this reminds me of current pandemic。 another story of messed up relationship between kids and their mothers drama from Inio Asano and that platonic love between friends。 Reminds me of Seki and Shimizu。 And this, mixed with "aliens" and world drama because of those aliens and why somehow this reminds me of current pandemic。 。。。more

To give you an idea of the vibe of this volume, let me go off on a tangent 。。。I remember hearing one person's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis。 At the time, this person was a student and they wondered if there was any point in doing their school work, since this was potentially the end of the world。 This tension--working towards a future when you cannot see whether one will exist for you--is played out in this volume。 There's also a hint of District 9, as an alien space ship appears and then To give you an idea of the vibe of this volume, let me go off on a tangent 。。。I remember hearing one person's account of the Cuban Missile Crisis。 At the time, this person was a student and they wondered if there was any point in doing their school work, since this was potentially the end of the world。 This tension--working towards a future when you cannot see whether one will exist for you--is played out in this volume。 There's also a hint of District 9, as an alien space ship appears and then appears to do very little。 This volume shows how eventually disaster and the abnormal can become business as usual, and how this stress permeates your life (gosh, don't know what that's like)。I won't be continuing the series but only because I'm not the right reader for it。 This was an interesting one but not exactly uplifting。 。。。more

4。5⭐TLDR for Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction Vol。 1: millennial teenage friend group slice of life story to the background of that spaceship from the District 9 movie。I love Inio Asano's art。 Pair it with his eccentric characters and an alien invasion and I was seriously hooked from the first chapter。 I find he misses when it comes to character development when he does one off stories, but I find he does his best with the series format。 Love the friend group and their humour。 It cracks me 4。5⭐TLDR for Dead Dead Demon's Dededede Destruction Vol。 1: millennial teenage friend group slice of life story to the background of that spaceship from the District 9 movie。I love Inio Asano's art。 Pair it with his eccentric characters and an alien invasion and I was seriously hooked from the first chapter。 I find he misses when it comes to character development when he does one off stories, but I find he does his best with the series format。 Love the friend group and their humour。 It cracks me up that this is really a slice of life/school life story, it just so happens that part of life involves an alien invasion。 And honestly, if anyone is gonna make that idea pop and look beautiful at the same time - it's this dude。 Need to think more on this because I might consider rounding up to a 5。 。。。more

The one star is for the art。 The rest is garbage。The blurb at the back is misleading。 When saying that, "Kadode Koyoma and her best friend avidly track the aliens' movements on social media", I did not expect them to just sometimes listen to public news channels and radio stations。 It sounded like they would be making an effort to find out more about the aliens。 They find out nothing。 The reader finds out nothing。 It's just the normal lives of teenagers with an added inappropriate sexual convers The one star is for the art。 The rest is garbage。The blurb at the back is misleading。 When saying that, "Kadode Koyoma and her best friend avidly track the aliens' movements on social media", I did not expect them to just sometimes listen to public news channels and radio stations。 It sounded like they would be making an effort to find out more about the aliens。 They find out nothing。 The reader finds out nothing。 It's just the normal lives of teenagers with an added inappropriate sexual conversation between a teacher and a student。 。。。more

Near-future slice of life manga in a setting with an alien invasion (mothership and all)。 This covers so many of my interests simultaneously。。。 but I bounced off the actual series。 There's something in Asano's humor that I just find frustrating, and here I also felt that the portrayal of teen girls was male-gazey even while trying to lean away from those kinds of tropes (how do you do that?)。Further frustration: there is a fat character who is drawn in a really strange manner, as if the author h Near-future slice of life manga in a setting with an alien invasion (mothership and all)。 This covers so many of my interests simultaneously。。。 but I bounced off the actual series。 There's something in Asano's humor that I just find frustrating, and here I also felt that the portrayal of teen girls was male-gazey even while trying to lean away from those kinds of tropes (how do you do that?)。Further frustration: there is a fat character who is drawn in a really strange manner, as if the author had never seen a fat person; and completely at odds with the rest of the art。I really wanted to like this, not just because of the themes, but also because my library just got the whole stack and it'd be really convenient for me to read this series。 But I think one volume was enough。I did like the commentary on warfare and invasion, though。____Source of the book: Lawrence Public Library 。。。more

this book was suuuuuper confusing for me!!! I had to read it twice in the same week , it was good , but I don't think I enjoyed it as much as I thought I would, because I didn't quite understand what was actually happening beside the fact that there's an alien ship that appeared all of a sudden in the sky and that Tokyo has to live with it and protect its inhabitants but it felt like it wasnt bothering a lot of people and also the daily life of two high school girls but I loved the drawings so m this book was suuuuuper confusing for me!!! Think I’ve discovered another favorite Manga! Though I thought the same when I started Punpun, but by the final volume I really wasn’t a fan anymore, so hopefully this doesn’t go the same way。

I cannot not give a great rating to Asano's work。 His artstyle is as beautiful as ever, maybe even more so in this manga, and the story is interesting, funny and satirical。 I am curious on what will happen going forward and my expectations are up for this one!

Given the chance to do-over, I would probably read this volume then skip ahead to 5 or 6。 I found the early 40 chapters really boring, even though I love the art and premise of this story。 The storyline with the undercover alien boy is the best part, and otherwise it reads like Asano was given free reign to write a sprawling social commentary with way too many secondary characters。I appreciate a lot of his perspective, but it's wrapped in a story that spins its wheels for a really long time befo Given the chance to do-over, I would probably read this volume then skip ahead to 5 or 6。 I found the early 40 chapters really boring, even though I love the art and premise of this story。 The storyline with the undercover alien boy is the best part, and otherwise it reads like Asano was given free reign to write a sprawling social commentary with way too many secondary characters。I appreciate a lot of his perspective, but it's wrapped in a story that spins its wheels for a really long time before actually focusing on characters around Volume 5。 Still catching up on the story so I hope it goes somewhere interesting! 。。。more

this one is definitely for a specific sense of humor。 the commentary feels less funny while living thru COVID times in the US, where we really are just continuing on as if nothing has happened。 reading the number of casualties in this fictional work after the recent announcement of 500k+ dead here stung some。 even with all that, I enjoyed it and want to read more。 the girls feel real in a lot of ways I don't see often in manga。 this one is definitely for a specific sense of humor。 the commentary feels less funny while living thru COVID times in the US, where we really are just continuing on as if nothing has happened。 reading the number of casualties in this fictional work after the recent announcement of 500k+ dead here stung some。 even with all that, I enjoyed it and want to read more。 the girls feel real in a lot of ways I don't see often in manga。 。。。more

I want to like Inio Asano’s work。 I think he’s a great artist and a great writer, but what he writes about doesn’t always connect with me。 This is my third series by him (after Solanin and Downfall), and I’m happy to say that it’s more my speed right off the bat。 First of all, it’s weird。 I’d describe DDDDD as “slice-of-life alien invasion high school drama。” There’s more too it than that, like international politics and war, but those things are background to the seemingly mundane lives of our I want to like Inio Asano’s work。 I think he’s a great artist and a great writer, but what he writes about doesn’t always connect with me。 This is my third series by him (after Solanin and Downfall), and I’m happy to say that it’s more my speed right off the bat。 First of all, it’s weird。 I’d describe DDDDD as “slice-of-life alien invasion high school drama。” There’s more too it than that, like international politics and war, but those things are background to the seemingly mundane lives of our central teenage cast。 Their lives are all too familiar right now: coping with the absurdity and sadness of an uncertain worldwide situation, trying to have a normal existence when the previous one has been uprooted。 So yeah, this hit a little close to home。 What kept me invested though, are the characters and the dialogue。 There’s lots of black humor here, which I love, and also some emotion。 I don’t know what to make of this series yet, but I know that I want to find out what happens next。 。。。more

I've read a few of Inio Asano's single-volume manga, but this is the first multi-volume manga series of his I've dived into。 So as such, it starts kinda slow。 I do like Kadode and Ontan as protagonists。 Their friendship feels very genuine and it's fun to read their interactions。 I also like the concept。 It has kind of an "Arrival" vibe to it with the alien spaceship just sitting there above Japan for unknown reasons。 But this very much felt like a set up/introductory volume for the series, with I've read a few of Inio Asano's single-volume manga, but this is the first multi-volume manga series of his I've dived into。 So as such, it starts kinda slow。 I do like Kadode and Ontan as protagonists。 Their friendship feels very genuine and it's fun to read their interactions。 I also like the concept。 It has kind of an "Arrival" vibe to it with the alien spaceship just sitting there above Japan for unknown reasons。 But this very much felt like a set up/introductory volume for the series, with later volumes presumably getting more interesting as they go。 I definitely want to read more just to see where this series ends up。 It does the intrigue really well。 。。。more

It is hard to find a finer demonstration of such meticulously crafted panel work。 Inio Asano is a master at capturing photo referenced backgrounds, reducing them to their barest bones, then recreating them into his own vision。 The backgrounds fit seamlessly into the design and atmosphere of his work and become, in effect, a character in the narrative。 While some “artists” might use photo reference as a convenient short cut, the same cannot be said here。 The cartoonish (though not simple) charac It is hard to find a finer demonstration of such meticulously crafted panel work。 Inio Asano is a master at capturing photo referenced backgrounds, reducing them to their barest bones, then recreating them into his own vision。 The backgrounds fit seamlessly into the design and atmosphere of his work and become, in effect, a character in the narrative。 While some “artists” might use photo reference as a convenient short cut, the same cannot be said here。 The cartoonish (though not simple) character designs set against the detailed, realistic backgrounds mirror the incongruity present in the narrative where the alien invasion falls into the general background noise of life in this world and the mundane themes of test prep, first love, and teen angst take the foreground。 I cannot imagine how long some of these panels take Asano sensei to complete。 。。。more
